Recently I learned about Saint Laura Montoya Upegui, who lived from 1874-1949 and was canonized in 2013. Mother Laura Montoya lived and served in Colombia and as Pope Francis said in her canonization Mass, she was an “instrument of evangelization, first as a teacher and later as a spiritual mother of the indigenous in whom she instilled hope, welcoming them with this love that she had learned from God.”
She has a short prayer that I’ve been reflecting on this week:
Destroy me, O Lord,
And upon my ruins
Build a monument
To Your Glory.
The phrase “destroy me” certainly shocked me, but I think because it is so shocking, it is effective in calling us to humility. Furthermore, in three simple lines, the prayer invites to use this humble posture to then be filled up and overflow with what God offers us.
We need more reminders of this radical call to humility and I’m grateful for St. Laura Montoya’s prayer and her example of living this out.
