Since the start of the pandemic, there haven’t been a lot of options for exercising. Typically I like to play organized or pick up sports like soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee and others. As a result, I have found myself going on runs more frequently, especially runs outside even in cold weather.
Running has been a great way to care for my mental health and an even more important outlet in this time of staying at home. I think the chance to be outside in the fresh air, taking in my surroundings helps center me. I love a good, pump up playlist but I find that running unplugged helps me make the most of my running time. I’m able to notice more things like the trees on my route, the sunshine and clouds, the other folks on the street and also try to let go of things or problems on my mind. I hope to try out trail running this year and see what that experience is like.
I know that running unplugged is not for everyone, but I encourage you to reflect on what activities, especially those outdoors, help ground you. What is one activity that comes to mind? How can we all seek out and make the most of those opportunities?
